DIY Hair Rescue: Beer

Why Beer Makes the Best Hair Moisturizer

We talk a lot about skin care tricks and secrets on this blog, because Skin Peel has so much knowledge to share and great products to offer. This week, we’re offering Skin Peel fans a simple tip to beautify their locks; naturally of course.

My bathroom cabinet is filled with bottles, jars and packets of sprays, serums and creams that are all meant to revive my over processed locks. In the process of trial and error, I have discovered effective and not so effective hair moisturizer products. I have also discovered that I can reach into my cooler and grab an inexpensive boost to my hair’s texture and style.

As it turns out, beer is the secret hair moisturizer you never knew you had. Comprised of proteins that act as a natural moisturizing agent, beer is shown to help repair dryness and boost hair body and volume. The yeast and sugar components in beer work to stimulate the cuticle and promote the appearance of shinier hair. Additionally, B vitamins in America’s favorite BBQ beverage promote overall hair health.

Here’s How:

The beer hair moisturizer strategy is simple to execute. First, take a beer (that you don’t plan to drink) and allow it to sit until it reaches room temperature. Wash your hair as usual and then pour the luke warm, flat beer over your head. Brush the beer into your locks from scalp to root, allow to set for a couple minutes, then rinse it out completely. Allow your hair to dry and notice the difference in shine and texture. Like the results? Repeat this process once weekly.

4 Worst Food Groups for Cellulite

Approximately 85% of women experience cellulite, which appears when fatty tissue builds up below the skin’s surface. Unfortunate genetics and poor circulation are often to blame for the condition affectionately known as "cottage cheese thighs."
Though you may have little control over genetics, you do have the power to choose a diet that will help diminish rather than exacerbate the appearance of dimpled skin. Whenever possible, limit the consumption of the following four food groups.

Sugar: Delicious foods high in glucose or sucrose can cause a spike in insulin, which promotes cellulite formation. Sugar laden foods such as boxed cakes, pies, ice cream and candy are on the list of those to limit.

Excess Salt & Fat: Fatty meats such as ham, along with an array of deep fried and canned foods contain an abundance of sodium that may cause the body to retain excess. Unnecessary water retention contributes to the development of cellulite.

Alcohol: Alcohol, especially sweet wine, liquors (such as rum) and liqueurs contain are often high in calories and toxins that break fat down into fatty acids. This process helps exacerbate the appearance of cellulite.

Processed and Fast Food: Your favorite fast food joint (McDonald’s, Checkers, Taco Bell to name a few) are stocked with foods that are high in sugar, salt, additives and saturated fats that form pockets of fat below the skin.  Canned soup, jarred pasta sauce, boxed juices etc. all fall into this limited consumption category.

Learn to Apply a Chemical Peel At Home in 6 Steps

apply a chemical peel in 6 steps

Radiant Facial Peel Benefits

Applying a peel is simple and the beauty payoff is priceless. Chemical peels are so effective because of the natural acids that help buff the dead skin cells that sit on top of the face, clogging the pores and causing damage and discoloration. Over time, facial peels help smooth fine lines, lighten dark spots and contribute to minimizing the appearance of minor facial scars.

Here Skin-Peel offers quick tips and best practices for at home peel application to set you up for success.

Apply a Facial Peel in 6 Easy Steps
Step 1 Is a precautionary step. Remember that peels are made with different ingredients at different strength levels. Everyone’s skin is built differently and may react differently to each of these peels. To ensure gorgeous results, we recommend applying a small drop of the solution behind the ear three days prior to the treatment. You are free to proceed if the skin does not react negatively to this test.

Step 2: Wash the skin with a transparent gel cleanser and pat dry. Then apply the pre-peel solution using a cotton ball to ensure that it is properly cleaned.

Step 3: Apply a small amount of your peel of choice to a gauze pad and
smooth it over the desired area of the face, neck or décolletage. Avoid the eye
area, lips and nostrils.

Step 4: If you are only applying one layer, allow the peel to set in the skin for 3-10 minutes before neutralizing. If you are an experienced peel user or conducting a more mild peel, reapply the solution in multiple layers. Allow the solution to set for 3 to 10 minutes in between layers. (check the Skin-Peel guide for full details)

Step 5: Remove the peel by applying the Neutralizer Solution directly over the treated area. Rinse the remaining solution with cool water for 30 seconds. Gently pat the skin dry and apply the Medpeel Daily Collagen Complex to nourish the skin with anti-aging ingredients.

Step 6: Moisturize as needed after the peel and apply SPF 30 to protect the renewed and vulnerable skin from damage during the day.

You should not use a skin peel if:
1. You are currently taking antibiotics
2. You have a tendency to form keloid scars.
3. You have an immune system deficiency or disease
4. You are undergoing treatments chemotherapy and/or radiation.
5. You have been treated with a hair removal system in the past two days.

Choose the Best Cleanser for Your Skin Type

choose the best cleanser for your skin type

Cleansers are formulated as lotions, pads, foaming solutions and gels to name a few. This diverse array of cleansers also come packed with a multitude of ingredients, making it nearly impossible for consumers to sift through the clutter and determine what will work best for their individual skin types.

Here we offer a few quick facts and tips to remember when selecting your next cleanser.

Oily skin.
Shiny or greasy skin types require a cleanser with a low pH level (4.0 to 6.0 range), which is slightly more acidic than your skin’s natural pH level (5.5). Cleansers at this level are more effective at removing oil from the skin. Look for exfoliating cleansers that contain salicylic acid or TCA.

Dry skin.
Dry skin types that do not produce enough natural sebum should avoid products that contain harsh ingredients. Avoid using products that feature alcohol as one of the three first ingredients on the back of the label and look for products with natural moisturizing agents such as cream cleansers.

Sensitive skin.
Red or blotchy prone skin is extremely sensitive to certain irritating chemicals. Sensitive skin types should avoid cleansers with fragrances and parabens, and look for cleansers with all natural ingredients.

Acne Prone Skin
If you wear a lot of cosmetics or experience regular breakouts, look for cleansers that highlight makeup removal as one of the main functions. Choose an alcohol free cleanser with ingredients such as sodium sulfacetamide, or benzoyl peroxide, which can help simultaneously cleanse and clarify.

All Skin Types Including Normal, Combination Tip:
When choosing face wash that works best for your skin, the golden rule is to experiment with different cleansers and notice how your skin reacts. Try using at least three different cleansers for 30 days straight so that you can accurately compare which product your skin loves the most.

We like: Medpeel Pre Peel Cleanser
This cleanser is perfect for normal, dry and sensitive skin types because it offers mild exfoliating agents along with moisturizing ingredients as it cleanses. Use this cleanser prior to peels for best results.

8 Tips For Clearer Complexion

1. GET MORE SLEEP!
My dermatologist told me about the link between sleep and acne when I was a senior in high school, but I always assumed my mother had slipped him 50 bucks to tell me that so I’d stop gabbing on the phone. And guess what? My recent skin problems didn’t start until I was in the throes of my blog redesign and averaging less than 5 hours of sleep a night. And since I’ve been continuing on that trend for weeks on end, it’s no wonder I look like a hormonal teenager.
2. CHECK YOUR BEAUTY PRODUCTS
Have you recently started using a new foundation or brand of blush? What about your facial wash? Is it new? How about your hair? Are you spraying copious amounts of hair spray on it? All of these things can contribute to a sudden increase in blemishes, so be weary when you try new products, and only introduce one new item at a time so you can pinpoint if anything in particular is giving you problems.
3. MOISTURIZE YOUR FACE!
The last time I had a bad breakout was about 2 months before our wedding when I was juggling florists, caterers, photographers, and wedding dress fittings while also holding down a full-time job. I remember feeling intense fear that I would look like a monster when the big day finally arrived, so I headed on over to our local pharmacy on my lunch break one day, and the gal in the beauty section took one look at my skin and said, “you don’t moisturize, do you?” I was shocked that she thought I should be adding lotion to my disgusting skin, but I have been applying moisturizer to my face ever since and it has made a huge difference.
Come to think of it, I ran out a few weeks ago, which may explain the sudden skin problems…
4. CHANGE YOUR DIET
I hate to break it to you, but anything that tastes good (think: refined carbs, fried foods, and chocolate) can cause you to break out. Don’t believe me? Then read Can Food Cause Acne? by YouBeauty.com and you’ll see why you need to throw the Ho Hos away and start snacking on celery sticks. Pronto.
5. KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF!
A gal at a skincare booth taught me this trick. She had flawless skin, and when I asked what her secret was, she told me that she washed her face with regular soap and water and would apply certain amount of other products like the Hyaluronic Acid, Skin-Peels and other great products. Check out www.skin-peel.com for great skincare products.

6. DRINK MORE WATER
It’s no secret that water is the answer to all of our problems. It helps us lose weight. It boosts our energy. It makes us more regular. It flushes toxins out of our bodies. And it makes our skin look better.
It also makes us pee a lot, which isn’t ideal after natural childbirth, but that’s a post for another time…
7. STOP SUNBATHING
I used to think sunbathing was the solution to bad skin because the moment I spent any time in the sun, my skin always cleared up.
It was magical.
But then a couple of days would go by, and the excess grease the sun exposure caused inevitably made my skin WORSE.
And yet I never learned…
8. HIT THE SHOWER AFTER A WORKOUT
I don’t know about you, but I sweat like a man when I go to the gym, and if I go long stretches between workouts, I start to notice an increase in blemishes along my hairline and on my back. So I try not to slack on my gym routine, and I’m always careful to soap myself up as soon as I get home from a workout. Well, sometimes I shove a few handfuls of Cinnamon Toast Crunch in my mouth first, but that only takes a couple of minutes.
