What is a salicylic treatment?

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxyl acid peel made from willow bark. It is primarily used for skin conditions such as acne; acne blemishes and scars caused by acne, but can also reverse the effects of aging and smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

Salicylic acid is fat soluble which allows penetration of the solution into the skin, to reduce comedones (blackheads and whiteheads). The ability for penetration makes salicylic treatments great for people with oily and/or acne prone skin because it will clean pores more effectively; remove dirt, dust and any accumulated sebum which cause breakout.

What can I expect during the treatment?

Before the treatment the skin is thoroughly cleansed. Then the solution is applied and left on from 2 to 15 minutes. You may experience a mild burning sensation while the peel is working. A fan blowing cool air on the treated area is used to minimize discomfort. The solution is removed and a cold compress is applied to ease any irritation. At the conclusion of the treatment, your skin may be slightly red and flaky. The top layer of skin will gradually slough away over the next few days, allowing new skin to appear.

What should I expect after a salicylic treatment?

It is important to use a sun block after a salicylic peel because sun exposure can cause
further irritation and adverse side affects.

What are the contraindications for a salicylic treatment?

A history of allergy to aspirin, pregnancy or lactating is contraindicated.
